Almost one tenth of the Sunday Times' 100 Best Films of the Decade have been Lottery-funded by the UK Film Council.

The list, published on 8th November, was compiled by The Times' key film critics and looked at the best films from around the world, of all budget size and genre, across the past 10 years.

The UK Film Council, formed at the beginning of the decade in 2000, has backed the production of nine of the Top 100 films:

  • [7] Kevin Macdonald's The Last King of Scotland
  • [13] Shane Meadows' This is England
  • [23] James Marsh's Man on Wire
  • [24] Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later
  • [45] Kevin Macdonald's Touching the Void
  • [52] Fernando Meirelles' The Constant Gardener
  • [81] Armando Iannucci's In the Loop
  • [83] Ken Loach's The Wind That Shakes the Barley
  • [96] Lynne Ramsay's Morvern Callar

Six of the Top 10 are British films, including Slumdog Millionaire, The Last King of Scotland, Casino Royale and Hunger. Five of these are from British directors, including Kevin Macdonald and Paul Greengrass, whose careers have been significantly developed by the UK Film Council.

The UK Film Council has also funded the distribution of 20 of the Top 100 films for more British audiences to enjoy, including Ari Folman's Waltz with Bashir, Anton Corbijn's Control, Michael Haneke's Hidden, Steve McQueen's Hunger and Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
