LONDON – Friday 12 December 2008. The wave of success for new British films continues with Sally Potter's Rage selected to screen in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival (5-15 February 2009). The film was co-funded by the Lottery through the UK Film Council's New Cinema Fund.
Lenny Crooks, Head of the UK Film Council's New Cinema Fund says: "Sally Potter is a filmmaker with courageous cinematic vision and to be recognised at Berlin is testament to her talent and creativity."
Rage is an exposé of the New York fashion scene from Sally Potter (Yes, The Man Who Cried), one of the UK's most distinctive writer/directors. Shot under the guise of a documentary made by a schoolboy backstage at a fashion week show, an accident on the catwalk sparks a murder investigation and a bitterly funny picture of the industry emerges.
The film features a star-studded cast including Jude Law (Breaking and Entering, Sleuth), Dame Judi Dench (Quantum of Solace, Notes on a Scandal), Dianne Wiest (Synecdoche, New York), John Leguizamo (Righteous Kill), Steve Buscemi (The Island). Andrew Fierberg and Christopher Sheppard produce for Adventure Pictures. Cinetic Media and 6 Sales are handling worldwide sales. The New Cinema Fund has invested £200,000 in the film.
The New Cinema Fund supports emerging talent and established filmmakers working outside the mainstream. Films supported by the New Cinema Fund include the award-winning Man on Wire which won the Grand Jury and Audience Prizes at Sundance in January 2008, Dominic Murphy's White Lightnin', Armando Iannucci's In the Loop and Alexis Dos Santos' Unmade Beds which are all screening at Sundance 2009 and the forthcoming Bright Star from Jane Campion and Fish Tank from Andrea Arnold.
