Impact of Local Cinema
November 2005: In 2003, the British Film Institute and the UK Film Council commissioned a study to measure and assess the impact of local cinemas on the social, cultural and economic life of their communities. Two Regional Screen Agencies; EM Media and Film London, funded case study elements of the project. For more information, please see the Statistics section.
Final report
Impact of Local Cinema
The research team focused on independent, locally owned and operated cinemas, and reports on the five case studies are available below. In two of the case study areas, local residents (who were not necessarily regular visitors to the case study cinemas) were also interviewed. And in one of the case study areas, a focus group with participants in the cinema's educational programme was conducted, together with a quantitative survey of the cinema audience and a small-scale local resident postal survey.
